1934 · Directed by Frank Capra · 105 min
A rich young woman slips away from her controlling father and heads for New York by bus, short of money and unused to ordinary life. A newspaperman who badly needs a story spots her and offers his help, for a price. A road comedy built on quick talk and forced closeness.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of Hollywood's screwball cycle, and a high point of Capra's Columbia years that lifted a modest studio into the front rank.
Watch with intention
Watch how much character, wit and mood come from dialogue, props and the cramped closeness of ordinary travel, not from big set pieces.
