American
2015 · Directed by David Robert Mitchell · 101 min
In suburban Detroit, a young woman's life changes after an intimate encounter leaves her with a warning she can barely believe. A slow-burning horror film built on dread rather than shocks, it plays like a teenage summer dream that has gone wrong.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film in the post-2010 wave of art-horror, and a modern reworking of the 1970s and 80s American suburban horror tradition, led by Carpenter's Halloween.
