A doctor returns to his quiet California hometown and finds patients insisting that their relatives are not who they seem. Nothing looks different, yet something is off. A lean, fast B-picture thriller that builds dread out of ordinary streets and familiar faces.
Why it matters in cinema history
One of the most influential American science-fiction thrillers of the 1950s, it helped set the pattern for stories where the enemy is indistinguishable from neighbours, friends and family.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a paranoia thriller in which the real tension lies in who can be believed, not in what is shown.
