2009 · Directed by Quentin Tarantino · 153 min
In occupied France during the Second World War, a Jewish-American unit sets out to terrorise the Nazis, while a young cinema owner in Paris and a charming, dangerous SS officer move through the same story. Tarantino tells it in five chapters, mixing tense conversation, sudden violence and dark humour.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of Tarantino's later phase and of the genre-mixing war film of the 2000s, joining the grammar of the spaghetti western to the Second World War picture.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a series of tension-building duels, where who controls the conversation matters more than who holds the gun.
