In 1938, archaeologist Indiana Jones is drawn into a hunt for the Holy Grail when his estranged father, a scholar of the legend, goes missing. The film is a fast, funny globe-trotting adventure in the spirit of the old serials, with a family story at its centre.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late high point of the 1980s blockbuster and of the serial-inspired adventure revival, it shows how New Hollywood directors rebuilt classical studio entertainment with modern stunt and effects craft.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a comedy of two men who cannot talk to each other, with the adventure as the thing that forces them to.
