It is 1957, and Indiana Jones, now older and out of step with a Cold War world, is pulled into a race against a Soviet unit for a mysterious relic. The film brings back the series' pulp spirit, wisecracks and set-piece chases, relocated to the atomic age.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late chapter in one of the defining blockbuster series of modern cinema, and a much-debated case study in the revival sequel, nostalgia and the shift from practical to digital spectacle.
Watch with intention
Watch it as time travel: a 1980s hero and a 1930s serial formula dropped into the pulp mood of 1957.
