Drama
Danish (Hævnen)
2010 · Directed by Susanne Bier · 118 min
A doctor who divides his time between a Danish town and an African refugee camp is raising a son who is bullied at school. When the boy befriends a grieving new classmate, two families are drawn into a quiet argument about anger, pride and what it costs to refuse violence.
Why it matters in cinema history
A prominent late work of the Danish cinema that grew after Dogme 95, it shows how that tradition's emotional directness was recast in a more lyrical, widely exportable form.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a parable: each scene of conflict poses the same question about how a person should answer humiliation.
