Poland, 1962. Anna, a young novice raised in a convent, is told by her superior to visit her only living relative before taking her vows. The meeting sends the two women on a quiet road journey into the country's recent past, told in stark black and white.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining recent European art film, it showed that a compact, almost austere drama in old-fashioned monochrome and the square frame could find a global audience in the 2010s.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about looking: how faces, silences and empty space say what the characters will not.
