1941 · Directed by John Ford · 118 min
An older man leaves the Welsh mining valley where he grew up and remembers the family, the village and the way of life that shaped him. A nostalgic, richly composed family drama about work, faith and a community whose world is slowly changing.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of studio-era prestige drama at its most polished, and a key work in Ford's move from Westerns to humane, communal storytelling that peaked around 1940 and 1941.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a memory: everything is filtered through one person's love, so notice what is warm, what is idealised and what still hurts.
