After the death of her secretive mother, Annie, a miniature artist, tries to hold her family together as her husband and two children struggle with their own grief. The film begins as a domestic drama and slowly tightens into something much stranger. Expect a patient, unsettling tone.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film in the 2010s revival of serious, auteur-driven horror, it treats the genre as a vehicle for family tragedy and psychological realism rather than simple scares.
Watch with intention
Watch it first as a portrait of a family under strain, and let the genre elements arrive as an extension of that.
