Hong Kong (春光乍洩)
1997 · Directed by Wong Kar-Wai · 96 min
Two men from Hong Kong travel to Argentina hoping to start over, far from home and from everyone who knows them. Shot in saturated colour and grainy black and white, it is a restless, intimate drama of desire, dependence and loneliness in Buenos Aires.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1990s world art cinema and of Hong Kong's post-New Wave generation. It also records the anxious mood of Hong Kong just before the 1997 handover, seen from the other side of the world.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a relationship told through mood and texture, where the image itself shows what the characters cannot say.
