Italian (Lazzaro felice)
2018 · Directed by Alice Rohrwacher · 128 min
Lazzaro is a young, unfailingly trusting farmhand on a remote Italian estate, where he does whatever anyone asks of him. His friendship with the owner's restless son draws him into a story about goodness, labour and who profits from both.
Why it matters in cinema history
A leading example of how contemporary European art cinema revisits neorealism's subjects, such as the land, poverty and exploitation, with a freer, more poetic imagination.
Watch with intention
Watch Lazzaro as a test of the people around him: how each of them treats someone who asks for nothing.
