On Halloween night in a quiet Illinois suburb, a teenage babysitter notices that someone seems to be watching her and her friends. Made on a tiny budget, the film builds a mood of dread from ordinary streets, hedges and doorways rather than from spectacle.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the American independent horror boom of the 1970s, and the one that turned the stalker film into a lasting, commercially powerful genre.
