2005 · Directed by Werner Herzog · 103 min
For thirteen summers, Timothy Treadwell lived among wild grizzly bears in Alaska and filmed himself doing it. Werner Herzog shapes that footage, with interviews and his own commentary, into a portrait of a man and of the idea of nature he believed in.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining documentary of the 2000s boom in nonfiction cinema, and a key example of the essayistic, personal documentary in which the director's voice and philosophy are part of the film.
Watch with intention
Watch two filmmakers at once: Treadwell, shaping his own image for the camera, and Herzog, deciding what that image means.
