Drama
Taiwanese (不散)
2003 · Directed by Tsai Ming-liang · 82 min
On a rainy night in Taipei, an old movie theatre shows its final screening, a classic martial-arts film. Almost no one speaks, and the film watches the building, its few visitors and its staff drift through the dark. The tone is quiet, patient and tinged with farewell.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key work of the Taiwanese New Cinema's later generation and of contemplative slow cinema, it is also an elegy for the shared theatre-going experience as it faded in the digital age.
Watch with intention
Treat the building as the main character, and watch how people occupy, cross and leave its spaces.
