Rome, 180 AD. A general at the height of his reputation is caught in a struggle over who will rule the empire after an ageing emperor. Ridley Scott's epic mixes battlefield realism, palace intrigue and arena spectacle in a story about loyalty, power and revenge.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the turn-of-the-millennium epic revival, it linked the old Hollywood Roman spectacle to the digital effects era and shaped the historical blockbusters that followed.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a classic revenge drama rebuilt with modern battlefield realism, where the spectacle always serves one man's private stakes.
