A Texas cattle baron brings home a Maryland bride, and the ranch, the family and the state itself begin to change around them. A three-hour family saga about land, money and pride, played at the scale of a Hollywood epic but built from domestic arguments.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late-Classical-Hollywood epic that shifts the western's legend of the cattle empire toward social drama, and a key record of James Dean's brief screen career.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story told through time: how a place, a marriage and a family are slowly reshaped by years rather than by events.
