Drama
American
1947 · Directed by Elia Kazan · 118 min
A widowed magazine writer in New York is assigned a series on anti-Semitism. To find a fresh angle, he decides to tell everyone he is Jewish. A major studio drama that treats a social problem as something to be examined in everyday behaviour.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the postwar Hollywood social-problem picture, made as the studios began tackling issues they had long avoided. It also marks Kazan's rise as a major American director.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about small social moments, where what people leave unsaid carries as much weight as what they say.
