Hawaii, 1941. A bugler transfers to a peacetime Army garrison and refuses to box for his company, while a sergeant and his captain's wife drift toward a forbidden affair. A military drama about duty, loyalty and private desire, shot in stark black and white.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of early-1950s Hollywood realism and one of the key studio films to treat the US military critically, bridging wartime flag-waving and the disillusioned war films of the 1960s and 70s.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about institutions: how rank, rules and loyalty press on individuals who simply want to live by their own code.
