In the 19th century, a brilliant and arrogant scientist becomes obsessed with defeating death. Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley's novel as a lavish gothic tragedy, told through two voices and built from enormous handmade sets, costumes and prosthetics.
Why it matters in cinema history
A major 2020s entry in the long line of Frankenstein films, and a prestige-scale gothic from a streaming company that insisted on a theatrical-style, craft-first approach.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a gothic opera in which sets, colour and costume carry the emotion as much as the dialogue.
