American
1994 · Directed by Robert Zemeckis · 142 min
Forrest Gump, a gentle, slow-speaking man from Alabama, sits on a bench and tells strangers the story of his life. It is a comic, sentimental tour through several decades of American history, seen through the eyes of someone who never doubts what he is told.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining mid-1990s Hollywood film that fused old-fashioned sentimental storytelling with new digital technology, and a key example of popular cinema rewriting recent American history as personal memory.
Watch with intention
Watch it as history filtered through one unreliable-in-judgment but honest narrator, and ask what the film chooses to show him seeing.
