In the 1820s Oregon Territory, a quiet cook who travels with a band of fur trappers meets a resourceful Chinese immigrant, and the two become friends. Together they dream of a better life and notice an unlikely opportunity: the only dairy cow for hundreds of miles. A gentle, patient Western about work, kindness and appetite.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining 21st-century revisionist Western, it carries the tradition of McCabe & Mrs. Miller into the age of slow, independent American cinema and rewrites the genre's founding myths.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a Western about labour, food and care, where the drama sits in small domestic acts rather than action.
