Adventure
American
1964 · Directed by Derek Kunzman
A solitary Viking has withdrawn into the vast Norwegian wilderness. As the story unfolds, it gradually uncovers who he is and what drove him there. A small-scale adventure film made in the United States in 1964.
Why it matters in cinema history
Firelight is not a landmark of film history. Its interest lies on the margins: it belongs to the tradition of independent, small-scale genre filmmaking that ran alongside the studio cinema of the early 1960s.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story told with minimal means: how much character and mystery can landscape, costume and a single figure carry?
