1999 · Directed by David Fincher · 139 min
A sleepless white-collar worker drifts through a life of business travel and flat-pack furniture until a charismatic stranger offers him a very different way to feel alive. A fast, sardonic, visually aggressive satire of 1990s consumer life.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of the pre-millennial unease that also produced American Beauty and The Matrix, it shows a major studio backing a prickly, satirical, stylistically restless adaptation of a transgressive novel.
Watch with intention
Treat it as a dark comedy about modern work and consumer life, told with a showman's energy and a satirist's bite.
