A New York doctor and his wife seem to have a settled, comfortable marriage until one conversation unsettles both of them. Over the following nights he drifts through a snowless, lamplit Christmas city, drawn toward temptations he does not fully understand. A slow, dreamlike thriller about desire and trust.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late-career summation of Kubrick's cool, formal style, and a key example of a major studio backing an adult, ambiguous art film at the end of the twentieth century.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a dream told in a realistic voice, where the logic of feeling matters more than the logic of plot.
