Evelyn Wang runs a struggling laundromat and is buried in tax paperwork, a strained marriage and a distant daughter. Then a strange version of her husband tells her that countless parallel lives exist, and that she may matter more than she thinks. A maximalist, funny and emotional science-fiction comedy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of early 2020s cinema, it showed that a high-concept, independently financed genre film could reach a mass audience and sweep the Oscars, while giving the multiverse idea an emotional, personal purpose.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a family drama wearing the costume of a sci-fi action comedy, and ask what each wild idea says about the characters.
