2003 · Directed by Gus Van Sant · 81 min
An ordinary day unfolds at a large American high school. The camera drifts after students and teachers through corridors, classrooms and playing fields, in long unhurried takes, giving each a few minutes of attention before moving on.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 2000s art cinema, it brought the long-take, walking-camera style of Béla Tarr and Alan Clarke into American filmmaking and became a reference for later films built on duration and observation instead of plot.
Watch with intention
Treat it as an exercise in attention: the film asks you to observe people, spaces and time rather than wait for explanations.
