American
1969 · Directed by Dennis Hopper · 96 min
Two long-haired motorcyclists pay for their freedom with a drug deal, then ride east from California toward New Orleans and Mardi Gras. The road trip is loose and episodic, with rock songs for a score and an open question about what America makes of people who look like them.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late-1960s American counterculture, and the model for the road movie as a vehicle for mood, music and disillusionment instead of plot.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a portrait of America seen from the road, where the landscape and the people on it matter more than the plot.
