On the desert planet Arrakis, the young heir Paul Atreides is taken in by the Fremen, the people who live in its deep sands. As war, politics and religion close in around him, the film follows a story of belonging, revenge and prophecy, told at the scale of a historical epic.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining science-fiction epic of the 2020s, it shows that large-scale, adult, director-driven spectacle could still succeed at the box office and in the awards season for technical craft.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about power and belief, and notice how every image of landscape or crowd shapes how much you trust what people say.
