In a distant future, a young nobleman's family is handed stewardship of Arrakis, a desert planet that produces the most valuable substance in the universe. Villeneuve adapts the first half of Frank Herbert's novel as a slow, immersive epic of politics, prophecy and dread.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining 2020s event film that revived the serious, large-format science-fiction epic after decades of effects-led franchises. It also succeeded where earlier adaptations of Herbert's novel had struggled.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about scale: human figures against vast architecture and landscape, and what that scale says about power.
