Drama
American
1989 · Directed by Spike Lee · 120 min
On the hottest day of the summer, one block of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant simmers with chatter, music, jokes and old grievances. Spike Lee's ensemble drama follows a neighbourhood and its corner pizzeria through a single day, vivid and funny, with an unease that keeps building.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of late-1980s American independent-minded filmmaking and of Black American cinema, it shifted what mainstream studio-backed films could say about race, and how loudly.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a pressure-cooker study of one block, where mood, colour and heat are as important as plot.
