Two years before the Civil War, a German dentist turned bounty hunter buys a enslaved man's freedom because he needs him to identify three wanted brothers. What starts as an odd partnership becomes a journey across the American South, told as a violent, darkly funny Western by a director who loves genre.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key late example of the Western's revival and revision, and the clearest case of a modern auteur reworking Italian genre cinema to address American racial history.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a genre film in conversation with history: notice where it borrows Western conventions and where it deliberately refuses to let them feel comfortable.
