On the last day of school in May 1976, a Texas town's teenagers drift through initiation rituals, parties and parking lots. There is no real plot, only one long night and a crowd of characters. It is funny, loose and quietly bittersweet.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of early-1990s American independent-minded filmmaking and the most influential descendant of American Graffiti, it made the hangout film a lasting form.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of a community in motion, where the setting and the crowd matter more than any single storyline.
