In 1916, a young man, his girlfriend and his little sister leave the industrial north and find seasonal work on a vast wheat farm in the Texas panhandle. A love story told in fragments, with more attention to light, land and labour than to dialogue.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late and singular work of the American 1970s, it pushed the era's artistic freedom toward pure image and mood, and became a touchstone for later cinematographers and poetic-realist filmmakers.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a painting in motion, where what the landscape and light say matters as much as what anyone says.
