Autumn 1941. A German war correspondent is sent aboard a U-boat to report on its patrol in the Atlantic. The film follows the crew through boredom, routine and sudden danger, in the cramped steel hull where nearly the whole story takes place.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of the war film and the submarine thriller, and the high point of postwar German attempts to portray the Second World War from the soldiers' side without propaganda.
Watch with intention
Treat the boat itself as the main character: watch how the space shapes every conversation, movement and mood.
