1998 · Directed by Alex Proyas · 101 min
A man wakes in a hotel bathtub with no memory of who he is, and a phone voice urging him to run. Around him lies a city where it is always night, pursued by a detective and by pale strangers in long black coats.
Why it matters in cinema history
A cult touchstone of 1990s science fiction, it carried the German Expressionist and film noir traditions into the digital age and helped define the genre's turn toward uncertain reality.
Watch with intention
Treat the city itself as a character and a clue: read its architecture, lighting and clocks as carefully as the dialogue.
