During the American Civil War, a Union lieutenant requests a posting on the far western frontier, hoping to see it before it vanishes. Alone at a remote post, he finds himself in the territory of the Lakota Sioux. A slow, spacious epic about distance, curiosity and a country changing.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the western's revival around 1990, it moved the genre's attention from the settler's point of view toward the people being displaced, and it brought the epic form back to a mainstream audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about looking: how a man learns to see a place and its people, rather than simply passing through.
