Three readings

1 · A leap of faithJen makes Lo's wish, to return to the desert, and her fall carries her to him and to freedom.

2 · Death as releaseEscaping every duty she has been handed costs her life.

3 · Deliberately unansweredThe film refuses to settle whether her freedom is a rescue or a loss.

What it says

Jen's leap completes the film's theme of freedom and its price. Li Mu Bai's confession comes only as he dies, while Jen jumps rather than live by others' rules. The film leaves her fate open so the cost stays unsettled.
