Six stories from six eras, from a nineteenth-century sea voyage to a far-future world, are cut together into one film. The same actors turn up in different roles across the centuries, and each story seems to reach toward the others.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 2010s for the large-scale, multi-strand puzzle narrative, and a late high point for the idea that one story can be told across genres, eras and faces.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a single argument made through rhymes: images, gestures, music and faces that echo across the stories.
