Czech (Ostře sledované vlaky)
1966 · Directed by Jiří Menzel · 93 min
In 1940s occupied Bohemia, a shy young man takes a job at a sleepy rural railway station, where the staff are preoccupied with pigeons, paperwork and women. The war passes along the same tracks as the timetable, and the film watches it from the side with deadpan, affectionate humour.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central film of the Czechoslovak New Wave, made in the brief 1960s thaw before the 1968 invasion. It showed that ironic, human-scaled storytelling could handle wartime history.
Watch with intention
Watch how the film makes small, private embarrassments the main subject and lets the historical backdrop sit quietly behind them.
