Hong Kong (重慶森林)
1994 · Directed by Wong Kar-Wai · 103 min
Two lovelorn Hong Kong policemen, in two loosely linked stories, drift through crowded streets, late-night snack bars and tiny apartments, hoping someone will notice them. A playful, restless romance about loneliness in a city that never slows down.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1990s world art cinema and of the Hong Kong new wave's late, more personal phase, it helped shift international attention from Hong Kong action films to its auteurs.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about time and chance: how a city of strangers brushes past, and how images and songs carry feeling rather than plot.
