In a near-future Britain, no child has been born for eighteen years and society is hardening into fear and control. A disillusioned former activist is drawn into protecting someone whose existence could change everything. Tense, grimy and urgent rather than glossy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining dystopian film of the post-9/11 era, it showed that big-genre cinema could adopt the immersive, documentary feel of reportage and make long takes a storytelling tool rather than a stunt.
Watch with intention
Watch the camera as a witness: it stays with one character through chaos and rarely cuts away to relieve you.
