Carrie White is a shy, isolated high-school girl, mocked by classmates and dominated at home by her fiercely religious mother. As the school year builds toward its prom, something unusual about Carrie begins to surface. A teenage tragedy told through the grammar of a horror thriller.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining horror film of the New Hollywood decade, it joined genre shocks to a serious portrait of adolescence and became the template for the Stephen King screen adaptation and the modern teen-horror story.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about adolescence and shame first, and as a horror film second, and notice how the style keeps you inside Carrie's point of view.
