Drama
Lebanese (کفرناحوم)
2018 · Directed by Nadine Labaki · 126 min
In the crowded poor districts of Beirut, a boy of about twelve, with no papers and almost no schooling, has to fend for himself and for someone even smaller. The film moves between the streets and a courtroom where he is bringing an extraordinary case. Intense, close to the ground and emotionally direct.
Why it matters in cinema history
A leading example of twenty-first-century social-issue cinema, in which neorealist methods are fused with emotional, awards-circuit storytelling to carry questions of statelessness and child welfare to a worldwide audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about what it means to be counted: who has papers, a name, a record, and who is simply invisible.
