A married suburban woman and a married doctor meet by chance in a railway station refreshment room. Over a few Thursdays, a polite acquaintance grows into something neither of them planned. A restrained, small-scale romance told with great emotional precision.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of British postwar cinema and a model for adult, interior romantic drama. It shaped how later films showed longing, propriety and unspoken desire.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about what two people cannot say, and see how the camera, the music and the setting speak for them.
