In 1957 a Brooklyn insurance lawyer, James Donovan, is asked to defend a man accused of being a Soviet spy. Spielberg turns real Cold War events into a restrained drama about law, duty and the stubborn decency of one ordinary man.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late-career example of Spielberg's historical dramas, following Schindler's List, Amistad, Munich and Lincoln, and a modern descendant of the classical Hollywood tale of the principled individual facing institutions.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about what one person's principles are worth when whole nations are ruled by fear.
