A boy named Mason, his sister and their separated parents are followed through childhood, with the cast and crew filming a little each year. The tone is observational and low-key, built from ordinary moments rather than big events.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of twenty-first-century American independent cinema, and the most celebrated case of a fiction film built on real elapsed time.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about time itself: look for what changes, what quietly stays the same, and how the film marks each jump.
