American
1989 · Directed by Oliver Stone · 145 min
Ron Kovic grows up in a Long Island town in the 1950s, shaped by faith, family and an unquestioning love of country. Oliver Stone follows him from childhood ideals into the Vietnam years and beyond, in a drama of belief tested against experience.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining entry in the late-1980s wave of Vietnam films, and the one that turned from the battlefield to the homefront. It marks the point where Hollywood treated the war as a subject for national self-examination rather than only for spectacle.
Watch with intention
Watch it as the story of an idea of America, learned in childhood, and how one person holds on to it or lets it go.
