1986 · Directed by David Lynch · 120 min
A college student returns to his small North Carolina hometown and finds a severed ear in a field. His curiosity pulls him toward a nightclub singer and a menacing world hidden beneath tidy lawns. The tone moves between sunlit pastiche, dream logic and real dread.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of 1980s American art cinema and the film that established Lynch as a major auteur, it helped define the modern suburban-gothic tradition in which small-town surfaces conceal disturbance.
