French (La Vie d'Adèle - Chapitres 1 et 2)
2013 · Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche · 180 min
Adèle is a teenager in the north of France, taking her last school years seriously and her first romances less so. A chance glimpse of a young woman with blue hair starts to reorder what she thinks she wants. The film follows her over several years, closely and at length.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of early 2010s European art cinema, and a focus of the debates about the female gaze and about how directors treat actors on set that followed it.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of one face over time: how the camera's closeness shapes what you feel and what you are allowed to know.
